Caroline Casey & The String Slingers Biography

As Austin's "Honky Tonk Queen" (according to legendary record producer Kim Fowley), Caroline Casey has been hard at work on the roots music scene for close to ten years.

First as half of the female rockabilly duo, THE CASEY SISTERS (http://www.myspace.com/caseysisters), and then as a solo artist in her own right, her spirited stage shows, sassy sense of humor, and lyrical talents have been garnering increasing attention on the local radio as well as the international music festival scene. From the icy terrain of Scandinavia to the lush romance of Italy, she has traveled far and wide to bring her own brand of traditional country music to people everywhere.

As a member of the Casey Sisters, Caroline has released several bodies of work including "Who's Crying Now" (2000/Tail Records) and "Crazy Spree" (2002/Tail Records). She has appeared on several internationally-distributed compilations as well.

Caroline Casey has shared a bill with dozens of musical legends from the Rockabilly, Country, R&B, and Doo-Wop genres. These include Buddy Holly's Crickets, Rocky Burnette, Wanda Jackson, Rosie Flores, High Noon, Lew Williams, The Calvanes, the Cleftones, and many more.

Over the years, Caroline Casey's thorough understanding of traditional music has landed her increasingly important roles in other mediums for today's music world. She is now a writer for several national music publications and has appeared in the Grammy-nominated documentary "Welcome to the Club: Women of Rockabilly."

HER MUSIC:

Blues and heartache, country heartbreak, hillbilly love affairs, and whiskey-soaked moments of saddening clarity abound, delivered in an honest, devoted yet hilarious live show--whether it be one-liners about whiskey, sex, or current events, or a quiet moment with eyes closed, not caring if there's an audience or not.

The stellar guitar maneuvers of renowned guitarist Tom Umberger combined with a rotating rhythm section comprised of some of Austin's foremost musicians of country, blues, and rockabilly genres, guarantee that this is one show you won't regret coming to see.

RECENT PROJECTS:

Caroline Casey's 2008 release, "This Broken Crown," is available at www.eltororecords.com and at a record store near you!

Legendary music producer Kim Fowley highly recommends this album, calling Caroline Casey "The Honky-Tonk Queen of Austin!"

"This Broken Crown" delves deeply into country music of the late 1950s to the late 1960s, with an thirteen tracks combining into an irresistible blend of mostly original high-steppers, barstool tear-stirrers, and classic Texas two-steppers. Caroline Casey's music and lyrics embody the careworn, steel-spined resignation of Loretta Lynn or the "devil take me" attitude of early Johnny Paycheck or Don Gibson.

Some legendary Texas-based talents have also made their mark on the album, including acclaimed singer-songwriter Stephen Lee Canner, who contributed “Caffeine, Nicotine.”

Award-winning songwriter and ‘rockabilly legend’ Al Urban penned a previously unreleased waltz (“Used Wedding Rings”) back in 1965, which will also be heard for the first time on "This Broken Crown," much to the enjoyment of Al Urban fans everywhere. Al Urban has been writing songs since the mid 1940s, and wrote several hits for popular 60s country singer Charley Pride.

Also featured on "This Broken Crown" is country music sensation Brennen Leigh, who duets with Caroline on the title track and shows her stellar mandolin skills on "Daddy's Girl."

Caroline Casey & the Stringslingers recently conducted a live performance and interview on KUT's Folkways show with host Kevin Connors, and has been featured by host Laurie Gallardo on NPR affiliate KUT 90.5's "Radio Without Borders!"
