Jeff Beck strode onto the stage in Auckland looking very much the star in his signature leather trousers, boots, white shirt, black waistcoat and white scarf, and immediately gave his adoring audience a blast of "Beck's Bolero" from the past; then for the next hour and three quarters we were treated to a sonic demonstration of just why Beck is a legend and in a space of his own. This was an example of a Virtuoso at work, the culmination of years (50) of finding new and different sounds and honing them into flawless playing and control which attracted several standing ovations at the end of songs. Beck's current style is one of an aural blender, his ear ever sharp in consuming and analysing the work of his backing bassist, drummer and keyboardist, and occasionally signalling to individual players for a particular flourish. His only acknowledgment to the audience all evening was with a bow of the head after rapturous applause and when he thanked the audience and briefly introduced the band. Aussie-born New York-raised bassist Tal Wilkenfeld, 22, was a gem as she smiled her way through snapping jazz rock solos, weaving through drummer Vinnie Colaiuta's percussion and David Sancious's keyboard washs and solos. Favourite songs? They all were but to pick a couple, "Brush With The Blues" and "A Day In The Life"......... This was the last gig in an Australasian tour and if you missed these concerts, a fabulous DVD recorded at Ronnie Scotts in London in 2007 will be available during February......grab a copy and see for yourself that God lives!!
