ARI HEST - SUNSET OVER HOPE STREET

ARI HEST - SUNSET OVER HOPE STREET

Have we found a Leonard Cohen for the modern

generation?

The music
industry is awash with both male and female brooding singer-songwriters, so it takes something pretty special to stand out from the crowd.

Ari Hest isn’t just a pretty face (
which he has) but writes songs that are timeless, touching and memorable and when you add them to Alex Wong’s subtle production and arrangements, SUNSET OVER HOPE STREET becomes something pretty special!

JOE HENRY - REVERIE

JOE HENRY - REVERIE
Joe Henry would have to be one of the most under rated artists around. He not only makes great albums, but is also a sort after producer (Solomon Burke for one). His own albums are truly works of art and you discover more with every listen. Reverie  is stunning, taking the listener on an Americana journey second to none!

THE BAND OF HEATHENS - TOP HAT CROWN & THE CLAPMASTER'S SON
The Band Of Heathens seem to be going from strength to strength as they have fine-tuned and tweaked their already near impeccable sound. In addition their three lead singers and main songwriters-Ed Jurdi, Gordy Quist and Colin Brooks are writing some incredibly good songs.

ROSE'S PAWN SHOP - DANCING ON THE GALLOWS

01 January 2012

ROSE'S PAWN SHOP - DANCING ON THE GALLOWS
Okay, this album has been out now for well over a year, but ROR philosophy is to profile bands that we believe deserve it, no matter how old an album might be! Rose's Pawn Shop are wonderful...Bluegrass, Rock, Country...With an arsenal of banjos, guitars, mandolin, fiddle, pedal steel, upright bass, and thundering drums, their sound is a wholesome mishmash of creek mud, rusty nails and your mom's cookin'. It's sincere, straight-forward....go listen! ROR RECOMMENDS!

ARTIST OF THE MONTH

SAVOY BROWN - "VOODOO MOON"

01 January 2012

SAVOY BROWN - "VOODOO MOON"
Legendary…a blues/rock institution…true innovators. These are just a few of the ways Savoy Brown has been described over the past forty years by music critics and fans.

One of the earliest of British blues bands, Savoy Brown, with founder guitarist Kim Simmonds at the helm, helped launch the 1967 UK blues boom movement that brought blues music back to the USA invigorating the style forever. In the process, the band became part of the framework that launched the rock and roll music of the 1970’s. Their influence now stretches into modern rock as we know it today.

With over 30 albums to their name, Savoy Brown continue to delight with the release of "Voodoo Moon" and are worthy additions to ROR Artist Of The Month!

MISSED TREASURE

NINA SIMONE - LITTLE GIRL BLUE

07 January 2012

NINA SIMONE - LITTLE GIRL BLUE

The re-issued CD does include other songs recorded by Nina Simone for the Bethlehem label not included on the original vinyl release but the additions fit right in with the jazzy, soulful feel of the musical landscape and their inclusion was a wise choice indeed. "Little Girl Blue" was not only a groundbreaking musical treasure; it's quite simply the eight wonder of the world!

SPECIAL PROFILE - THE BLACK KEYS -"EL CAMINO"

El Camino - The Black Keys The Black Keys new album restores faith in honest rock...

5.0 out of 5 stars You're a BLACK KEY If You Don't Buy This Album!!!!, December 8, 2011
This review is from: El Camino (Audio CD)
This album ROCKS(period)!! That said, while "Brothers" was a bit overstuffed with slow-burning soul songs, this "El Camino" is a fuel injected, revved up, pedal-to-the-metal, tire squeeling lean and mean rock feast! In fact, I think this album is best to listen to while driving because you will find it impossible to avoid slapping your thumbs to the drums on your steering wheel, kick drumming your feet and pounding your console! Now THAT is the sign of a great rock album!

SPECIAL PROFILE - PAUL CURRERI

Raised in Richmond, Virginia, Paul Curreri now makes his home in Charlottesville with songwriter/guitarist Devon Sproule; the two were married in May of 2005. Though he grew up playing music, he ended up enrolling at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) to pursue painting and film. While his experiences at art school helped develop his ability to observe and record the visual world, his true passion again rose to the surface. By the time Paul graduated from RISD, he'd composed over 200 songs on guitar and piano. Turning down a job at MTV, he set to work carving out a life as a musician. The Big Shitty is his latest album and puts him into the Dylan, Springsteen, Joe Henry school of music. 4 stars for this album.

 VIDEO SHOWCASE!

THE WONDERFUL ETTA JAMES, R.I.P.

JONATHAN WILSON - "GENTLE SPIRIT"

Gentle Spirit - Jonathan Wilson Wow, this is pure nostalgia. JW has produced a wonderful mash of soft West Coast, Laurel Canyon folk rock, with atmospheric psychedelic overtones
sung in a whispering style. Slightly indulged lyrics and long meandering songs make this a real listening album.elements of Grateful Dead, Jackson Browne.... Perfect for the Holiday period!  ROR RECOMMENDS!

THE ROLLING STONES LIVE IN TEXAS '78

5.0 out of 5 stars The Stones at full throttle, October 20, 2011
This review is from: Rolling Stones: Some Girls Live In Texas '78 (DVD)
Ronnie Wood still playing guitar like he meant it instead of mugging and posing...... keith looked and sounded good...... Jagger, well what can you say, talk about the hardest working man in show biz. I was surprised at how much guitar he played, and not one costume change, how modest. Charlie was on fire, whip crack energy for the whole show. Bill Wyman looked like it could have been 1969 or 1989, the only thing moving on him were his fingers but he sure was in the groove. Good to see Stu, and Ian McLagan, and no brass section was also a surprise, I didn't realize how stripped-down this tour was.... the energy of this concert is amazing..... a performance of this caliber does the band great credit.....this is a terrific contribution to the Stone's legacy. Courtesy Amazon  ROR RECOMMENDS!

DAN MICHAELSON

Sudden Fiction (Deluxe Edition) - Dan MichaelsonROR RECOMMENDS!

Dan Michaelson is the 33 year-old whisky barrel baritone and short-legged leader of Dan Michaelson and the Coastguards. His baritone voice seems to know about the dirty and the pure and his song's reflect the feeling on SUDDEN FICTION  his new solo album.

TINY RUINS

Some Were Meant for Sea - Tiny Ruins
