J D SOUTHER

IF THE WORLD WAS YOU

Slow Curve Records

****

A very fine album which was definitely worth waiting for
JD's first release since 1984, this album is a combination of the
country-rock elements that has helped him win over fans from around the
world and certainly worthy of adding to any music-lover's collection.

House of Pride is a very well-crafted track, which has elements of rockabilly, big
band as well as the odd strum of a banjo.

It starts with an upbeat groove, and never lets go once it has your attention.
Sung, as always, with such energy and vigour, this is a track for the purpose
of getting the juices flowing on a Monday morning.

One More Night (Killing Spree) sounds as though it was taken from an Eagles'
album which never made the cut. Souther's vocals sound awfully like Don Henley
himself, which is never a bad thing.

This can be quite confusing as you think that the Eagles' drummer might have
gate crashed the recording session. It certainly has a New Orleans sound to
it, which again, is never a bad thing. It is a truly uplifting track that
would be great to listen to live whilst sipping several bourbons on the
rocks.
A Chorus of Your Own has the sheer brilliance of including some exceptional
vocals sung in a laid-back style and instrumentation which, towards the
track's conclusion, sound as though it was a jamming session.

But this is no late, Friday night strum between you and your buddies in some dimly lit bar
but those who truly know how to get the best out of their chosen instrument.
In this case, it is mostly a trumpet, double bass and a piano. Not a bad
combination, that's for sure. Having been responsible for helping the Eagles
write some of their best hits, New Kid in Town and Heartache Tonight being
leading examples, this contribution comes through most in Come on Up.
Possessing a great beat with fantastic backing on the instrumentals, Souther's
vocals are at the best they can possibly be and at no times does he disgrace
himself with, if it can be described as, a relaxed country-rock song. If the
beat was a tad quicker, then it would have been ruined. But, with all his
experience, he knows not to ruin a great sound once he has found it.

At the grand age of 64, IF THE WORLD WAS YOU clearly demonstrates that he has no
intention of donning that cowboy hat and riding off into the sunset never to
be seen again. No, this is JD back to his best. RH

Country risk- taking at its best—genuine Maverick music! Country music by its very nature is conservative. The motto, certainly for the Nashville mainstream, is don’t take risks
