The Dreamer - Etta James

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Dreamer (Audio CD)

The swan song of aging vocal artists is sometimes pretty thin and often disappointing. Not so this outing by the inimitable Etta James. The vocal register is lower. The pace is slower. But she's still belting out classic jazz and R&B songs to that funky groove that makes you want to rub up against someone. I could wear out a turntable listening to Misty Blue as I did when I was a teenager. Cigarettes and Coffee is paen to the great Otis Redding, but with a vibe that is all Etta. Of 11 tracks on The Dreamer, there's not a weak cut in the bunch.

Space Age Blues - Devon Allman's Honeytribe

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD, March 2, 2011
This review is from: Space Age Blues (Audio CD)

I bought the first Honeytribe CD and thought it was great so I bought the second one. It too is a great CD. Excellent musicianship and production. Well I had the pleasure of seeing Honeytribe in concert this past weekend and all I can say is these 2 CD's do not do the band justice. They were so heavy and intense I couldn't believe it. From the opening song right through to the encore they were smokin' hot and just blew the audience away. Buy the CD's because they are good and you will love them but you have to see Honeytribe live to really appreciate the music. Devon Allman is a very creative and talented blues rock guitarist and he has a very powerful voice. The rhythm section was one of the tightest and innovative I have ever seen........... www.amazon.com

Peace Meal - Carolyn Wonderland 2011

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, October 23, 2011

This review is from: Peace Meal (Audio CD)

I'd been hearing about Carolyn Wonderland for a couple of years now, mostly via keeping up with the Midnight Rambles, but also on Imus. So, I was very excited when I was able to secure reservations for her latest appearance at Levon Helm's Ramble.

I knew to expect an incendiary performance; I did not expect her to leave a smoking crater in the woods along Plochmann Lane in Woodstock. She is a stunningly good performer, with passionate and powerful vocals, wonderful guitar (and trumpet!), and a really tight band. Courtesy Amazon

About as traditional and authentic
as contemporary Americana gets,
Charlie Parr's brand of bluegrass
makes a direct link back to artists
like Charlie Patton, Doc Boggs and
Bukka White, calling upon banjo,
fingerpicked guitar, harmonica and
a rigidly primitive recording sound.

Grammy Award and Handy Award Nominee, John Primer's history is the real deal! John's life started in Camden Mississippi on his grandmother's sharecropper land, dreaming of a better life and working in the fields. His biggest dream in life was to someday play his guitar with his idol Muddy Waters. John ended up doing that and much, much more! John should be credited for helping Muddy Waters bring the Blues to Chicago and for taking it into the 21st Century. John has been that perfect liaison, filling the gap between the older traditional style and the younger Chicago Blues style. John went from field songs and gospels, into traditional Blues, then R&B and Soul then finally pioneering the infamous Chicago Blues style we know today. All Original is a dream come true for John. 12 all original songs recorded for his very own record label, Blues House Productions, is another first. Cataloging his own music, writing, producing, teaching young musicians and sharing his experiences with the world is now his focus and life mission. All Original starts out fast with "Add A Little Touch", shaking you up and getting you ready for a for a full Blues Experience. "Going Back To Mississippi" pays tribute to his home and let's you into his heart. "I Called My Baby" is a slide guitar lovers dream! "Everyday Brings By A Change" is one of John's favorites and represents how he looks at life. "All Original" ends with "Love In My Heart For You" a traditional acoustic duet with just John and Harmonica Hinds.(Amazon)

Jimmy Barnes - The Rhythm and the Blues

One of the greatest hitmakers of the postwar R&B era, Amos Milburn wrote and recorded uproarious odes to sex, booze and all-night partying. It was rock 'n' roll in all but name. Amos rocked the house for the Los Angeles-based Aladdin label right from the beginning. At his debut session in 1946, he waxed a piledriving 'Down The Road Apiece', and he kept the late '40s R&B hit parade jumping with 'Chicken Shack Boogie', 'Roomin' House Boogie' and 'Sax Shack Boogie'. They're all here on 'Amos Rocks,' along with his odes to the bottle, like 'Bad, Bad Whiskey', 'Let Me Go Home Whiskey', and 'One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer' Plus, there's Amos' torrid '56 remake of 'Chicken Shack Boogie' cut in New Orleans with Lee Allen on sax and Earl Palmer driving the drumbeat. Long before Fats Domino or any of his fellow revolutionaries came anywhere near a studio, Amos Milburn rocked! (amazon.com)

This stunning live recording captures legendary guitarist Robben Ford at his very best, perfectly displaying his unique style; one that combines, yet transcends, his roots in jazz, fusion, blues, soul and rock, distilling the past into the moment, and always with an eye on the future. "I wanted to capture that experience of playing live. "I find it has a lot more impact than a studio recording. Music is a living, breathing thing. Real art is timeless. It doesn't have a beginning and an end. It's all about the present moment," Ford says. Soul on Ten was Recorded Live at The Independent in San Francisco,CA throughout the month of April 2009. The album includes Robben Ford's classics, as well as three brand new Robben Ford compositions.

Award-winning vocalist Janiva Magness is among the premier blues and R&B singers in the world today. Her voice possesses an earthy, raw honesty and beauty born from her life experience. She won the 2009 Blues Music Awards for B.B. King Entertainer Of The Year (only the second woman to ever do so, Koko Taylor being the first) and Contemporary Blues Female Artist Of The Year. Now Janiva is ready to thrill audiences with the release of her latest CD, The Devil Is An Angel Too. Co-produced by Janiva and Dave Darling (Brian Setzer, Meredith Brooks, Dan Hicks), The Devil Is An Angel Too is a hard-hitting collection of material that showcases Magness' glorious, soul baring vocals as well as the tough, incendiary guitar work of Zach Zunis. It's a fiery, red-hot combination that burns its way through twelve powerful and unforgettable songs.

Janiva wraps her huge, soulful voice around original material written especially for her, and songs from Julie Miller, Graham Parker, Nick Lowe, Joe Tex, Gladys Knight, Nina Simone, Ann Peebles and James Carr. Janiva Magness cuts to the heart and soul of each song with grit, heart and fierce passion, making The Devil Is An Angel Too her most compelling album yet.

"Stunningly sung...Magness is a blues star"--USA Today

"Rollicking blues, swampy soul and R&B...stark, gritty, emotional material...terrific, magnificent voice...she burns through these songs like she has everything to prove"--Allmusic

This new live album is the essence of Jonny Lang. It captures the passion he feels for his music and truly shows off his musical talent. "Livin' for the City" is awesome; I especially like the outstanding vocals of Jason Eskridge in that tune. The new album has a great song selection, a few oldies and the best of the new stuff. If you haven't had the chance to catch this show in person, this album is a great alternative........
