As Crooked Still walked onto the stage the noise was incredible as the whole audience clapped, cheered and shouted, it was such a great reaction that Aoife stopped in her tracks and just looked out into the auditorium in amazement, she then stepped to the microphone and announced that they did not expect this and that they now loved Bedford. But then the noise level went up even more as they went into their first song, the incredibly popular Ain’t No Grave from the TV series TRUE BLOOD..........
By the second song the audience had settled down to enjoy the show and what a show it was. The banjo of Greg Liszt intro’d The Golden Vanity before Aoife O’Donovan’s sweet, pure vocals drifted gently around the hall. After Little Sadie Aoife then started singing the excellent Half Of What We Know from the SOME STRANGE COUNTRY album with solos from Greg on banjo and Brittany Haas on the fiddle.
The wonderfully lively bluegrass tune Tell Her To Come Back Home had Brittany again playing some tremendous fiddle and the pulsating Calvary had some more fine banjo as well as Tristan Clarridge playing a super cello solo. In fact every song played had every band member excelling, with Aoife playing acoustic guitar on a few select tunes and the whole sound held together by the tremendously solid rhythm of Corey DiMario on double bass. Brittany’s rousing fiddle solo started off the beautiful Oh, Agamemnon with superb vocals from Aoife. Her vocals then became quite haunting on the slow Undone In Sorrow with fine cello and banjo, then the audience became a bit more vocal again as the very popular I’m Troubled started up. The set came to a close with some amazing fiddle playing from Brittany on Locust In The Willow and they then left the stage to rapturous applause and whistles, prompting them to come back for the statutory encore.
Crooked Still are classed as purveyors of nu-grass but whatever category people want to put them into the audience at the Civic Theatre just knew that they had seen one hell of a great band.............. David Knowles
